I love coding at night due to noconstant interference when there’s nothing to disturb your aloneness. Coding during the day means having to deal with interruptions in the form of people, calls, texts, and life in general. But in the wee hours of the night, there is no one to disturb me, no social notifications to bug me, and I can code just the projects I want to. While working in the salon, which made me so tired during the day, I would spend the late nights learning to program. If you ask a random programmer when they do their best work, there’s a high chance they will admit a lot of it’s done late at night. Some earlier, some later. Some people are naturally not morning people, so they sleep till noon and work afternoons and late nights, still maintaining a healthy amount of sleep. [...] The br
This is an article designed to prove to you that coding at night has been very effective. Before you know it, it’s 2:30 AM, and you’re still coding. You’ll get maybe 4–5 hours of sleep before your morning standup, but it feels worth it. You’ve accomplished more in these few quiet hours than you did during the entire chaotic workday. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. In the programming world, working past midnight has become almost a badge of honor — a sign of dedication, passion, and “real” developer status. But here’s the brutal truth that’s going to shatter this romantic notion: Your late-night coding sessions aren’t making you a better programmer. They’re systematically destroying your career. ## The Midnight Myth: Why Programmers Think They’re Night Owls [...] Most programmers don’t realize they’re suffering from chronic sleep deprivation because the symptoms develop gradually and become normalized within developer culture. Here are the warning signs that your late-night coding habit is damaging your career: ## Immediate Symptoms (Next Day) Decreased Code Comprehen

Commented Aug 11, 2011 at 12:44 Add a comment | The light from computer screens is typically very good at keeping you awake. For this reason, you should have a gap between computer use (of any kind) and trying to sleep, and you should be wary of staying up past your bedtime to "just do a little bit more". Otherwise, you may end up lying awake at night, unable to drop off. The duration should be reached by experimentation, as everyone is different, and the kinds of computer usage vary. You may find some success using f.lux to allow you to keep coding right up until bedtime.
