DeepSeek Harness is now available as an MIT-licensed open-source framework for building AI agents. Version 0.1.0 is a developer preview with plugin-based components for models, tools, sessions, sandboxes, storage, orchestration, and the web interface.
DeepSeek Harness is designed as the runtime layer between a model and the environment in which an agent operates. Its architecture exposes models, tools, skills, sessions, sandboxes, storage, control loops, scheduling, and the user interface as extensible plugin components.
The v0.1.0 release is distributed under the MIT License, allowing developers to inspect, modify, self-host, and extend the project. The framework is intended to provide infrastructure for agent development rather than a finished end-user agent product.
DeepSeek and the project’s authors describe the release as an early developer preview. Users should expect rough edges and possible compatibility-breaking changes as the APIs and plugin contracts evolve.

DeepSeek Harness follows the industry formula Model + Harness = Agent, supplying the runtime scaffolding around DeepSeek's V4 models. DeepSeek assembled a dedicated harness team in March 2026, explicitly benchmarking its work against Anthropic's Claude Code. DeepSeek officially launched DeepSeek Harness v0.1 on August 13, 2026, as an open-source MIT-licensed Developer Preview. The framework uses a Cordis-based architecture in which models, tools, skills, sessions, sandboxes, storage, loops, scheduling, and the UI can be swapped or recomposed as plugins. Its minimalist mode was used for published V4-Flash agent scores of 82.7 on TerminalBench 2.1, 76.7 on Cybergym, and 70.3 on Toolathlon verified. DeepSeek released DeepSeek Harness v0.1 in developer preview and published the full source code under the MIT license. The project ships as `dsh` at deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness. A harness is the layer between a model and the environment it acts in — the tools, files, sandboxes, and control loop that let an agent keep working. DeepSeek frames it as Agent = Model + Harness. Most harnesses hard-code that layer: the agent loop, the tool registry, and the session store are fixed, and extension happens only at whatever hooks the authors exposed. Harness takes the opposite position, stated in the first lines of its README: everything is a plugin. Models, tools, skills, sessions, sandboxes, storage, loops, scheduling, and the UI all sit behind Cordis plugin boundaries, and any of them can be [...] ## Is it deployable? Yes, but as developer infrastructure, not as a production agent product. v0.1 is a developer preview.
