Codex Workflow: Compact Related Tasks and Use Handoffs Across Agents

A practical Codex workflow suggests keeping related work in the same session with automatic or manual compaction, while opening a new session for unrelated tasks. Handoffs remain useful when transferring unfinished work between agents such as Claude Code and Codex.

The main idea is to reduce irrelevant context rather than create a new session for every follow-up step. After completing a task, an agent can be asked to produce a handoff for the next development stage, which is then sent as the first message in a fresh session. For continued debugging or work on the same change, staying in the original session and using /compact may preserve more of the reasoning trail. For an unrelated request, a new session can keep the context focused.

Handoffs become particularly valuable in cross-agent workflows—for example, using Claude Code to draft and repeatedly review a technical plan before asking Codex to execute it against explicit goals and acceptance criteria. The workflow also stresses verifiable completion conditions, such as pixel comparisons for UI migrations, tests, or screenshot evidence. Compaction is not lossless, however: older logs and details may be omitted, so key constraints, acceptance criteria, and the current state should be written explicitly into the handoff.

Never lose your work between Claude Code sessions - Artem Zhutovartemxtech.substack.com · Complementar

Running a retrospective before closing the session. 12 corrections - “this is AI slop” - each one becomes a permanent skill update. Now the agent generates a handoff file. It schedules this auto-continue. I’m not touching anything right now. The agent just types in the next prompt and starts a new session. It tells the other agent - okay, here’s a handoff, follow the instructions, this is continuation from a previous session. This is what was done, this is the current state, and here are the next steps. So now we are in a fresh context window. We started everything clean and we can continue our work this way. [...] The standard way is to do compaction. There is this compact command that frees up context by summarizing the conversation so far. This command is great and it solves this issue, but I have a few problems with that command. One of the problems is I can’t capture learnings right now with that command. How do I transfer the context to another agent? I wan
