ChatGPT Linux Desktop App Launches in Preview for Developers

Another request for Official Linux Desktop App. You can release it as an AppImage for portability. I use ChatGPT for complex projects and the browser becomes unusable pretty quickly and the Chrome addons don’t always work, so you have to create new chats all the time to continue your work, and that requires a LOT of explaination in the new chat to catch it up. It would be great to have ChatGPT available as a native Linux application, or even as a CLI tool for terminal use. I currently use Gemini CLI due to the lack of a ChatGPT alternative in this space. Also agree that we need a proper Linux app, just like the mac or windows one. Performances in Browser are very bad once a chat becomes too large. I also agree please make it happen. [...] From a user perspective, it is difficult to understand why ChatGPT has official desktop support on some major platforms but still not on Linux. Even a first version with limited scope would already be greatly appreciated. Support for common distrib

Pleaaaaaase jus t do it guys! I guess you can or chat may be   With as much effort as you guys are putting into this app, Linux users deserve it too! Please, please, PLEEEEEEEEASE develop a Linux desktop app. I don’t even have Windows installed on my laptops or desktops, and I’d love to use OpenAI Work to streamline potential workflows. With such a strong and able coding model, it’s ridiculous that AI companies haven’t developed an app for Linux users yet! OMG, this is way overdue! I fully agree, and would compete with the Claude Desktop that was just released. [...] This would be great. I prefer working on Debian than any other system! Thank you for posting this! Please Linux app, need it, thank you OpenAI is actively losing money because of this, i am not sure their market research team is doing a good job. I thought about switching from my 200$ plan in cursor to codex, but because i am on linux, this is completely out of question, as i’ll switch a full featured

And that is my main concern: I am afraid too many people want to let it do the work for them rather than use it to help them work better and do better work. Your concern is valid. And also it’s true the majority of people using AI today already use it in a lazy or wrong manner. So that they can work and actually think LESS. When used correctly you should be able to accomplish far more and also have think even more because you attack projects and niches you previously wouldn’t even think twice about attempting.

So, what happens when you have one developer, six months, and the use of AI to build an entire Linux desktop from scratch? Well, there's a project for that. Starling is the first real desktop written completely by AI, which is interesting as this is a new desktop environment largely written in Swift and powered by its own Wayland compositor, is also compatible with X11 applications, and reportedly has been built mostly with Claude. It can run things currently like Chrome, VS Code, Blender, Slack, and more. But, it's an interesting new development as it's one of Linux's first AI-powered projects. And whether you think it's slop or not, I'm going to let you decide, but we're going to be talking about Starling today as it's a brand new project available to use if you have Ubuntu 26.04. [...] great work to Starling. And then we do have a smaller group who's actually excited about this because they feel that it's refreshing to finally see new desktop environments pop up especially ones that
