OpenAI launches ChatGPT desktop app for Linux in preview with Codex
OpenAI has released a preview of the ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, with .deb and .rpm packages that bring ChatGPT, Work, and Codex together in a native desktop experience.
OpenAI has announced that the ChatGPT desktop app for Linux is now available in preview, directly addressing long-standing requests from Linux users. The new native application combines ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex in a single desktop workspace, allowing users to manage projects, work with local files, and run browser workflows without leaving the app.
The preview currently supports .deb and .rpm package formats, covering major Debian-based and Fedora/openSUSE-based distributions. This marks the first official Linux desktop client from OpenAI; previously, Linux users relied on web access or unofficial community-built ports that converted the macOS app for local use.
OpenAI is inviting users to install the preview and share feedback on the community forum. For developers who prefer Linux as their primary environment, the update brings Codex and other ChatGPT features closer to their everyday workflow, reducing the need for browser-based workarounds or third-party tools.
