Google’s Pixel 11 Pro rear HiLight LED has limited built-in notification support. An open-source app called HiLight Studio adds per-app colors, notification patterns, and animation controls.
Google introduced HiLight as a rear LED feature on the Pixel 11 Pro line. Its current system behavior covers a limited set of use cases, including calls, messages, WhatsApp notifications, and status indications related to Gemini. Google has reportedly indicated that additional native functionality may arrive later.
Developer Dhananjay_Tech created HiLight Studio to expose more of the hardware’s capabilities. The free, open-source app can assign colors and effects to individual apps, with options such as pulse, breathe, wave, comet, and rainbow animations. It does not require root access or include ads, although reports say the setup process can be complicated.

“HiLight Studio” is the result, an app that gives users full control of the Pixel 11 Pro’s light to do basically anything. Where Google solely supports call notifications and a status light for Gemini, this app lets you use it as a notification LED with patterns, custom color choices, and more. It’s customizable on a per-app basis with granular settings beyond that. You can also build and export presets to share with other users. You can also just have “HiLight” active all of the time if you want. It’s almost exactly what we wanted from this feature. ## Top comment by DiamondMaster115 Wow, the hack was super fast. I honestly thought it was already restricted using the whitelist to Phone by Google, Whatsapp, and Gemini apps only. The downside? Setup is very complex. HiLight Studio adds custom colors, light animations, and app notifications to your Pixel 11 Pro's underutilized HiLight LED.
The funny thing is, I don’t even have to imagine what a more capable HiLight could look like. The open-source HiLight Studio app takes the Pixel 11 Pro’s LED much further than Google currently does. You can assign different colors to different apps and play around with patterns such as pulse, breathe, wave, comet, and even rainbow. Yes, that’s much closer to what I imagined when Google first showed off HiLight. Adamya Sharma / Android Authority To be fair, Google has already said more functionality is coming, so HiLight clearly isn’t the finished product yet. And honestly, that’s what makes its current limitations even more frustrating because I can already see just how useful this light could eventually become. [...] This time, HiLight is doing the damage. And the annoying part is that I actually love the idea. It reminds me of the notification LEDs we used to have back in the day. I was quite excited to play around with it on my Pixel 11 Pro XL because, honestly, I’ve missed having

HiLight is a major part of the latest family of Pixel 11 Pro smartphones, including the 11 Pro XL and 11 Pro Fold. (The base model Pixel 11 doesn't include this feature.) It was one of the first features to be leaked in the rumor mill. HiLight syncs with Google Messages and WhatsApp for message indicators, but it also works with Gemini when you trigger the chatbot. The small circle on the back of the Pixel 11 Pro lights up in blue and purple, two color hues that have become synonymous with Gemini working in the background.
