MiniMax Releases H3 Weights, but Broad Open-Source and SOTA Claims Need Caveats
MiniMax has released initial weights for its H3 multimodal video model. It appears particularly strong in video editing, while its license and incomplete component release limit the scope of the open-source claim.
MiniMax launched H3 in late July 2026 and subsequently published initial model weights on Hugging Face. The multimodal system is designed for text-to-video, image-to-video, and workflows that combine image, video, and audio references, with a focus on commercial production and post-production effects.
Calling the release fully open source would be misleading. The initial package does not include the sparse-attention implementation, some complex system components remain unavailable, and the model is distributed under a community license with usage and territorial conditions that require review.
Available reporting suggests that H3 is highly competitive for video editing, but it does not lead every generation category. It reportedly trails some competing systems in text-to-video and image-to-video evaluations. Claims that it universally matches SOTA or delivers roughly 80% of Seedance 2.0’s quality remain unverified.
