Google DeepMind says it will make PlanAssist, a planning-support tool built with Gemini, available to 12 additional local planning authorities in England. The tool is designed to assist with routine work on householder applications, including home renovations, so officers can focus on tasks requiring professional judgement.

In early testing across Barnet, Camden and Dorset, the company says PlanAssist reduced the average time officers spent on householder assessment tasks by up to 58%. That figure concerns assessment time; it does not establish that applications were approved 58% faster.

PlanAssist is intended to support, not replace, planning staff. Officers retain the final say on every application. The available evidence does not yet establish results from wider deployment.
