Candidate Says OpenAI Software Engineering Interviews May Test AI-Agent Coding

A candidate’s account describes an OpenAI software engineering process focused on distributed systems, system design, concurrency, and technical leadership. Some applicants may also encounter a beta Agentic Coding Round involving an AI coding agent.

Several Chinese-language reports have repeated an account attributed to a candidate who described an OpenAI software engineering interview process. The reported process included recruiter screening, coding and system-design interviews, a 48-hour take-home assignment, and onsite interviews covering versioned key-value storage, fault-tolerant scheduling, distributed webhook delivery, and ChatGPT-style infrastructure design.

The most notable element was an Agentic Coding Round said to be in beta. Candidates reportedly receive an existing codebase and a difficult engineering task, then use an AI coding agent to implement a solution. Interviewers are said to evaluate problem decomposition, collaboration with the tool, and the reasoning behind design choices rather than coding speed alone.

The account remains only partially verified: the available material consists mainly of secondary reports, and the original post has not been independently confirmed. The stated total number of rounds also does not fully align with the detailed list, while the agent-based round reportedly does not apply to every candidate. It should therefore be treated as an individual interview report, not a confirmed company-wide standard.
