Anthropic Unveils Economic Model Projecting AI's Impact on Jobs and Growth by 2030
Anthropic's economics team has published an interactive model and a survey of over 10,000 Americans assessing how artificial intelligence could reshape wages, employment, and GDP by 2030.
Anthropic’s economics research team has introduced an interactive forecasting model designed to evaluate the trajectory of US economic growth, employment, and income distribution under various AI adoption scenarios leading up to 2030. The project enables users to simulate potential outcomes and compare their projections with public sentiment data collected from more than 10,000 Americans.
The framework outlines several development trajectories ranging from modest productivity gains to transformative disruptions. Under the most severe scenario modeled, accelerated AI adoption could expand economic output by roughly a third compared to baseline projections, but could also drive knowledge-work unemployment toward 18 percent while shifting an increasing share of national income toward capital holders. However, typical survey respondents anticipated a more moderate outcome, projecting approximately 10 percent higher GDP and an unemployment rate near 5 percent.
Anthropic noted that the model is intentionally simplified to capture broad dynamics, omitting variables such as proactive policy interventions, macroeconomic business cycles, the aggregate demand impact of data center infrastructure, and catastrophic risks. The initiative aims to provide policymakers and researchers with an analytical framework to better prepare for labor market shifts driven by AI automation.
